Why Malta?
Superbly located in the heart of the Mediterranean, the Maltese archipelago consists of three islands – Malta, Gozo and Comino. It has a total population of over 400,000 inhabitants on an area of 316 sqkm and a coastline of 196.8km. Malta is the largest of the three islands.
The island lies 93 km south of Sicily and 288 km north of Africa. It is equidistant from Europe and Africa, Gibraltar and the Suez Canal.
Malta’s sunny climate, expansive beaches, 7,000 years of intriguing history, exquisite Mediterranean cuisine and a population renowned for its hospitality, makes it a prime tourist destination.
Malta is a melting pot of civilizations with a history dating back thousands of years. Malta has been inhabited since around 5200 BC and a significant prehistoric civilization existed on the islands prior to the arrival of the Phoenicians who named the main island Malta meaning a safe haven.
Later the islands were for centuries the seat of the Sovereign Military and Hospitaller Order of St John [commonly known as the Knights of Malta]. Malta then became a British colony and it eventually acquired its independence in 1964. Malta became a member State of the European Union in May 2004 and adopted the Euro as its currency in January 2008.
Malta has a fascinating and rich history and its strategic position in the heart of the Mediterranean has allowed it to develop as an important trading post. The Malta Freeport is one of the leading ports for container transhipment in the Mediterranean.
Over the past 15 years the island has strived on strengthening its economy by attracting foreign investors in the financial, manufacturing and services sector and in tourism. Malta’s accession to the EU makes it a key member of this Group. European in attitude, custom and lifestyle, the Maltese have developed a vibrant and stable economy. They have highly skilled, professional services available covering all aspects of commerce, law, insurance, banking, financial services etc.
All these factors, including a climate which is warm and healthy, a well trained and disciplined workforce available at rates generally lower than other European centres, attractive flexibility for non-residents in terms of offshore trust status and double taxation exemption treaties and others make Malta an ideal location for our clients, business partners and principals.
