The Malta Maritime Attractions
Malta’s coastline is well indented with natural harbours as well as operational ports. Historically, these ports have established the Islands as a centre for Mediterranean Commerce, combining old world charm with modern facilities. At the centre of countless shipping routes, these ports provide a wide variety of professional shipping services of value to major commercial entities.
The Grand Harbour of Valletta is Malta’s main port, one of the most spectacular natural deep water harbours in the Mediterranean. This port, girdled as it is by an uninterrupted line of historic fortifications of massive proportion, is becoming an ever increasingly popular port for cruise passengers and the related ever growing cruise industry.
The Malta Freeport, situated at the south eastern tip of Malta in the harbour of Marsaxlokk, has become an important transhipment centre in the Mediterranean for both container traffic and oil carriers. Apart from acting as a safe and secure haven for seafaring vessels of all types and sizes, the Grand Harbour, Marsaxlokk Harbour and Marsamxetto Harbour also offer a comprehensive service covering all maritime requirements, a service that reflects the care, commitment and knowledge that the Maltese maritime community is today well renowned for.
Once in Malta, the Valletta Grand Harbour has established itself with no navigational difficulties. Valletta Grand Harbour handles all cruise liners visiting Malta and Roro vessels carrying passengers, cars, conventional cargo and trailers and offers ship repair facilities at the Malta Shipyards and other smaller ship/yacht repair yards. Containers are also unloaded in the Grand Harbour at the facilities operated by Valletta Gateway Terminal, but the bulk is handled at the Malta Freeport. There are transit sheds totalling 8500 square meters as well as other open storage space and also an 86,000 tons capacity Grain Silo.
Marsamxetto is fast developing in a yacht marina and in the not too far distant future is also earmarked to receive Cruise Liner Vessels.
