Malta Freeport

Malta Freeport Terminal is synonymous with transhipment success in the Mediterranean and is presently among the key players in this region. The most important shipping companies from all over the world have been attracted by Malta Freeport central geographical location, proven track record, state of the art facilities and cost effective operations.

Marsaxlokk is the main container transhipment port where the Malta Freeport operates as a customs free zone. Malta Freeport handles a traffic volume of 1.3 million TEU’s per year and is presently consolidating the positive results registered to date.

The Freeport’s central geographical location makes it well qualified to play a key role in servicing both the west and east of the Mediterranean region in a single call. This results in drastic reductions in the duration of the delivery of goods, cost savings in the distribution system and better customer satisfaction. It also enjoys that essential minimum deviation factor of just six nautical miles between the Gibraltar straits and the Suez Canal, for the largest container-ships to make their economies of scale count. To ensure that Malta Freeport can continue to service its clients efficiently the Freeport is increasing its present capacity by further developing the land as well as the terminals equipment.

In October 2004, the Government of Malta awarded the French Shipping company CMA CGM a 30-year concession to operate and develop Malta Freeport Terminals which was extended in February 2008 from 30 years to 65 years.

Since privatisation CMA CGM has pledged to invest the total of some 175 million Euros in brand new equipment and expansion of its yard facilities This investment is expected to create about 500 jobs over the next five years and to increase its capacity to more than three million containers annually.

With such investment in its facilities, Malta Freeport stands in a better position to continue participating and competing successfully within the Mediterranean containerisation market.
